Located in eastern Uganda just about 4-5hrs drive from Kampala. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano with one of the world’s largest caldera & is one of Uganda’s oldest physical landform. The park covers over 1145sqkm with a 40sq.km caldera. In Uganda, its southern and western parts are located in Bugisu region with a rich cultural significance of the Gisu, Sabiny and Ogiek people where as its northern part extends to Karamoja region. Its located on both Uganda and Kenya’s boarder and its one of Uganda’s UNESCO world heritage sites.
Cultural and natural heritage.
Mount Elgon is home to two tribes, the Bagisu and Sabinyi covering the forest margins. These two practice circumcision with the Gisu famously known for their biannual cultural ceremony /practice known as Imbalu which initiates boys into manhood. They describe the mountain to be the embodiment of their founding father and refer to it by his name-masaba. The bamboo forests are source of their staple food known as malewa.
The vegetation is banded into zones whose characteristics is determined by altitude and rainfall. Its covered by dense forest, lianas, epiphytes and lichens among other tree species. Its home to a number of various species of mammals and 300 bird species.
Lucky visitors to mount Elgon national park participate in quite challenging but interesting hike to the top of Uganda’s second highest peak; after Rwenzori’s magherita, the wagagai at 4321m. There are various trails leading through to the summit.
Rock climbing in and outside the park is available at Nkokonjeru and Wanale ridge plus Sipi, bird watching and mountain biking among others.
